BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
JUNE 13,2002
Dr. Linton called the meeting to order at approximately 12:35. Neal Burnett was asked to
give the invocation.
Dr. Linton then introduced the guests present. Sandra Rivera, who is a potential
representative to the health board and Dr. Byran Peeler and his wife Julie where also
introduced to those who did not know them.
Dr. Linton then administered the oath of office to Sally Meeks. After the oath, Dr. Linton
corrected the last board meeting minutes stating that a spelling mistake on page two on
the third paragraph, last sentence the word there should be their. Dr, Linton continued
with corrections and asked Mr. Jeffers to explain the correction on the fourth page, sixth
paragraph, second to the last sentence which stated " It is that the Health Board normally
quarrels in obscurity and does not normally entertain to public comment." It should read
" it is that the Health Board normally toils in obscurity and does not normally entertain to
public comment."Sally Mccks corrected the word personal to personnel, found on page
three on the second paragraph.
Minutes were approved by Dr. Linton and second by Neal Burnett.
Dr. Peeler then discussed communicable diseases and pneumonia vaccine. Dr. Linton
then asked if there were any questions regarding the pneumonia vaccine.
John Castro then discussed bioterrorism. He stated that "since 9/11, the CDC has put out
grants to establish bioterrorism plans." He continued to- say that HAN (Health Alert
Network) has offered $30,OOO.00 to establish the network and that some of that money
would be used for training education of health officials. At this time John Castro was
putting together a bioterrorism committee. Dr. Linton asked if any board members were
interested in the committee at this time: Motions were -passed to -establish the network.
Laura Mason took the place of Ericka Jathan in her absence. Laura had no reports to give
on smoking. She stated that the teen pregnancy coalition continues to meet with good
response_ The high school will be playing "The Game of Life" on April 10, 17, 23, and
24. Cynthia Davidson and Juvenile -Detective Stan Branam will be in charge. Laura also
mentioned that the month of May represents Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month and that
several -tables will be set up: One will be- set up at Coronado, Estacado Jr High, and the
Health Dept. as will as the Catholic Family Services.
Mr. Jeffers was asked about the outcome of Malathion spraying and the responsibility the
Health Department had. He stated that the Health Dept has no authority to address the
issue of malathion and that Dr. Peeler will observe if there are any health changes
associated with- coming spraying season.
The coalition will soon be discussing with the Principals grades 642 about getting Teen
Pregnancy on the Curriculum.
Catholic Family Services might provide -funding for Bill Boards to put up all over town.
Tommy Young continues to add teen pregnancy articles in the Plainview Daily Herald.
Overall, everything has gone- very well.
John Castro presented plaques to Cinde Ebeling and John Peck. Thanking them for their
5 years of service on the Board of Health.
Mr. Peck opened the floor for questions and comments.
Mr_ Peck adjourned the meeting with the next_ meeting to be held August 16th at 12:30.
