HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-11-2001 Board of Health MinutesPLA.INVIEW —HALE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING OCTOBER 11, 2001 Board Chairman, Dr. Kit Linton, called the regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Health Directors of Plainview -Hale County Health Department to order at approximately 12:30 P.M. at the Plainview Country Club, on October 11, 2001. Those in attendance were: Dr. Kit Linton, Dr. Michael Hinze, Dr. Stephen. Turner, Jim Jeffers, Margaret Kay, John Peck, Benny Cantwell, Neal Burnett, Sally Meeks, R.N., Cinde Ebeling, Judy Shannon, Mike Hutcherson, John Castro, Laura Mason, and Nancy Cornett. Guests that attended the meeting were Wally Hatch, Walter Cox, Kelly Priest, and Lisa McCray. After Dr. Turner gave the invocation, Dr. Linton asked if there were any corrections or comments on the minutes of the meeting. The minutes were approved as presented, as were the expenditures for July and August. Dr. Linton administered the Oath of Office to John Peck and Cinde Ebeling, officially extending their memberships on the Board of Health. Dr. Turner gave his report on sexually transmitted diseases in Hale County. He mentioned that the sexually transmitted diseases have dropped, making it the lowest he has seen in a long time. Dr. Turner gave an update on Hepatitis A in Hale County_ The vaccine is highly recommended, but still not required. He also discussed small pox vaccinations, mentioning that there is no treatment for small pox. People under the age of 40 years old that were not given the small pox vaccination as children, have no immunities. Dr. Turner also spoke of anthrax. He mentioned that anthrax is a bacteria that can form spores, which may live for an extended period of time. Also, it would take many spores to make you sick. He stated that there are two types of anthrax. The first kind is on the skin and the other is inhaled. The inhaled version is the more serious of the two, with a 90% fatality rate. Both forms are treatable with antibiotics and survival rates are high when diagnosed early. Lastly, Laura Mason LVN from the Plainview Hale County Health Department gave an update on how the Teen Pregnancy Coalition was doing. Mrs. Mason mentioned that the Coalition was still waiting on some replies and would keep everyone updated as soon as they heard something. Dr. Linton opened the floor for questions and comments.
