BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
JUNE 14, 2001
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Health Directors of Plainview -Hale
County Health Department was called to- order at approximately 12:30 P.M. at the
Plainview Country Club, by Board Member John Peck on June 14, 2001.
Those- in attendance were: Mr. John Peck, Dr. MichaeiHinze, Dr. Stephen Turner, Jim
Jeffers, Margaret Kay, John Castro, Ron Miller, Benny Cantwell, Cinde Ebeling, Neal
Burnett, Judy Shannon, Phil Sullivan and Nancy Cornett. Guests included were Wally
Hatch.
After the invocation was given by Dr. Michael Hinze, John Peck asked ifthere were any
corrections or comments on the minutes of the meeting. The minutes were approved as
presented.
John Peck began the meeting by introducing the new member for the -Board of Health.
Her name is Judy Shannon. He said Mrs. Shannon is a county member representing
Abernathy.
Dr. Turner gave -his report on communicable diseases in Hale County. He stated that
Hepatitis C is currently the most common sexually transmitted disease in Hale County
with the greatest percentage occurring at the prison. He said that it is spread through
blood transfusions, sexual activity, W drug use and that there is no vaccine for
Hepatitis C.
Dr. Turner also mentioned that in the state of Texas, Hale County has one of the highest
rates of Chlamydia and Teen Pregnancy.
Dr. Turner then mentioned the -upcoming vote to make Hepatitis A mandatory in Hale
County. At this time it is recommended, but not required. The state supplies the vaccine
at no charge through the Vaccine for Children Program.
John Castro then discussed the National Performance Survey. He explained that
according to House -Bill #1444, public health services arebased on 10 -essential public
health functions. He further went on to explain how it affects the Plainview -Hale County
Health Department in that if we were tested on the -National Performance Survey the
Health Department would probably receive a zero.
Phil Sullivan gave- a brief summary for Ericka Jathan on how the Teen Pregnancy
Coalition was going. He said that there are currently 22 active members. Mr. Sullivan
mentioned that Larry McBee -received the- letter. He -mentioned that the coalition talked
to Judy Buchanan and the -Health Education Advisory Board -for the next school- year.
Dr. Linton asked if there
