BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING
OCTOBER 10, 2000
The regular scheduled meeting of the Board of Directors of Plainview -Hale County
Health Department was called to order at approximately 12:30 P.M. at the Plainview
Country Club, by Board Chairman Dr. Kit Linton on October 10, 2004.
Those in attendance were: Dr. Kit Linton, Dr. Michael Hinze, Dr. Stephen Turner,
Margaret Kay, Sally Meeks, R.N., John Castro, Earle McDonough, Cinde Ebeling,
Ron Miller and Health Department Nursing Supervisor Ericka Jathan, R.N
After the invocation given by Dr. Turner, Chairman Dr. Kit Linton asked if there were
any corrections or comments on the minutes of the meeting. The minutes were approved
as presented.
Dr. Turner discussed a new vaccine called Prevnar. It is a series of shots that if started at
17 months or older there would be only one shot Dr. Turner said, "They're predicting
that the vaccine will help reduce the instance of ear infections required by about half.
The vaccine also prevents bacterial sinus infections in children as well." He mentioned
that now the vaccine is offered for $5.04 at the Health Department under the Texas
Vaccine for Children program.
Dr. Turner also mentioned Hepatitis A vaccine. He said the disease comes from
contaminated food. Children 2-19 years of age can receive this vaccine in two doses six
months apart. The vaccine is also offered under the Texas Vaccine for Children program
for $5.00.
Dr. Turner spoke of a recent change in the state law that concerns chicken pox. He said
that chicken pox is now a reportable disease. His reason was tracking the effectiveness of
the vaccine. It will now be reported to the state by name, age and address. Everyone is
required to report any suspected chicken pox disease to the Health Department.
Dr. Turner gave his report on sexually transmitted diseases in Hale County. He said that
state has reported a statewide and nationwide increase in Gonorrhea as well as in our
area. This may be due to better reporting between agencies.
Ericka Jathan gave an overview of how the first teenage pregnancy prevention meeting
turned out. She said that she and the school nurses came up with an idea to bring in a
lawyer and policemen as speakers. Also, they will consider a youth advisory committee
(adolescents) from different schools to join. Meetings will be held monthly.
Lastly, John Castro gave a summary of the Texas Department of Health in Austin. He
mentioned the T11-'13 Grant in the amount of $60K that will begin in March. This will be
used for computer hardware extended over a period of three years. He also discussed
Rider #18 -a Texas State law, which states that when a girl 14 years old or younger comes
in to the Health Department and is pregnant, then the Health Department has to report it
to Child Family Services.
Dr. Kit Linton opened the floor for question and answers.
Dr. Linton adjourned the meeting with the next meeting being held on February 15th at
12:30.
