HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-10-2003 Board of Health MinutesPLAINVIEW-HALE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING APRIL 10, 2003 Those in attendance were: Dr. Kit Linton, Elizabeth Regner, Neal Burnett, Sally Meeks, RN., Debbie Morris, Belinda Pena, Dr. Sidney Ontai, Sandra Rivera, Benny Cantwell, John Castro, Ericka Jathan, R.N., Guests that attended the meeting were Dr. Charles Smith Board Chairman, Dr. Kit Linton, called the regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Health of Plainview -Hale County Health Department to order at approximately 12:30 P.M. at the Plainview Country Club, on April 10, 2003 Neal Burnett gave invocation. Dr. Linton asked if there were any corrections to the last minutes. Dr. Linton then moved on to the expenditures and asked if anyone had any questions for the months January and February. Dr. Linton then asked John Castro if he had any comments about the expenditures. Minutes and Expenditures were approved. Ericka Jathan explained that there was not much to discuss in communicable reports just that the SID count went up in February compared to January. She also discussed Hantavirus in December. Plainview as had one case in which the person passed away. We also have a second case, which is being investigated. Ericka explained that Hantavirus is from rat/mouse droppings and how to clean the area, like car garage or basements, wet it down and wash with bleach you also need to wear a mask if you sweep a closed area, As for Health Department news, Texas Department of Health is training Ruby Riggins and Maria Rodriguez to audit daycares. The Health Department is also vaccinating children at the Hale Center ISD with their needed immunizations. Ericka also discussed that the month of April is Observation of infant week and the Health Department will be giving free immunization every Thursday for the month of April. On April 24, 2003 Ericka was invited as a guest Speaker at the Coronado junior High School to talk about Teen Pregnancy and STD's. Dr. Charles Smith discussed a program in Illinois called CRADLE. This program involved several people in the community who put it together. It started with fifth grade boys and girls. An instructor would go in and teach lessons. This instructor did not have to be a teacher it could be someone in the program. They would separate the boys and girls in to groups and Dr. Smith would go in and have the boys write down their questions about sex or relationships on paper at the beginning of class. Dr: Smith would pick up the questions and answer any questions they had. Debbie Lawrence was the Director of labor and delivery. She worked with the girls on the same topic and had them write down their questions also. Seventh grade was a little harder because they had workbooks which had them more involved. They wrote down their questions and gave thein to their instractorto be answered as well. Elizabeth Regner asked Dr. Linton if she would like the staff and Health Board members to get together to cone up with a plan for the next meeting to get were we need to be.
