MONDAY MARCH 25, 1991, 7:30 P.M.
COUNCIL CHAMBERS, CITY HALL
The meeting was called to order by chairperson Lynn Davis.
Other board members attending were Rebecca Escalante, Betty
Gonzalez, Lee Roy Lightfoot and Jannie Benson. City staff
attending was Jim Sewell, Building Official.
B.A. CASE NO. 1112
A request of Mrs. Gilbert Garcia for a variance to construct
a carport in the required front and side yards in a R-1
(Single-Family Residential) Zoning District on Lot 2, Block
9, Edgemere Addition and located at 2802 W. 20th Street.
The case was presented to the board by Mr. Sewell. He stated
that the Zoning Ordinance required a 30 foot front yard and a
8 foot side yard. He further stated that the applicant was
also requesting that north end and the west side be enclosed
to provide addition weather protection. Mr. Sewell stated
that the Building Department was opposed to the enclosure due
to the fact that it would limit the visibility of not only
the applicant but also the neighbors and the intersection of
20th and Amarillo.
Mr. Fred Bechtold, representing the owner, stated that Mr.
Garcia is a paraplegic due to the result of a shooting
incident while he was on duty as a Police Officer. He
further stated that the enclosure would provide added
protection during inclement weather.
Mr. Bechtold advised the board that the carport was basically
twenty feet by twenty feet in size and would be located seven
feet into the required west yard and twelve feet into the
required front yard.
He also stated the eighteen foot open space between the
carport and the front property line would provide sufficient
visual clearance to view traffic on the street from the
locations indicated by the city's staff member.
