February 10, 2015
Present were Board members Joe Ed Sullivan and Leticia Gaucin. Also present were Assistant City Manager
Andrew Freeman and President of the Genealogical Society Linda Shipp.
John started by talking about the Customer Satisfaction Survey that was taken last fall. He stated that most of
the comments provided were okay. The purpose of the survey was to check on services provided by the library
and to determine patrons' opinions of possibly closing at 8:00 instead of 9:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The decision to go ahead and close one hour earlier on these two evenings was backed by statistics for patron
numbers and circulations taken during this final hour on the two days in question and approval from City
Manager Jeffrey Snyder and Assistant City Manager Andrew Freeman.
Another change made as a result of the survey was that the evening hours would continue into the summer.
Whereas before, evening hours were only available from Labor Day through Memorial Day, now they are
available year-round. This will require scheduling changes to be made to the Texas Summer Reading Club
Program in June since two of the four staff members will come into work two hours later on Tuesdays and
Thursdays to cover the later hours being made available. Even though the library is open eight hours on
Saturdays from Labor Day through Memorial Day, it will remain closed on this day during the summer.
A few patrons mentioned in the comments put on the survey they would like to have more activities for young
children in the juvenile area. John applied for and received a $1,000 (one thousand dollar) grant from the
Plainview Area Endowment to the Friends of the Unger Memorial Library. This grant was utilized to purchase
two learning activity cubes and some sound puzzles.
The Hale County Literacy Program granted the Friends of the Unger Memorial Library with $10,000 (ten
thousand dollars) for the purchasing of a computer literacy center for young children. Purchases made with this
money included a new rug used to designate the computer center in the juvenile area, a table and eight chairs,
four computers and touch -screen monitors, eight headphones, a camera for each computer, and a variety of
software and programming.
John informed the Board that he would be working on the annual report for the Texas State Library which is due
at the end of March. Even though funding is no longer available from the State Library, it does provide certain
services to libraries at minimal cost.
Friends of the Unger Memorial Library will be hosting the annual book sale the last weekend in March. John
explained the money raised is used for discretionary spending for the library. This year the request will be made
to use some of the funds for a new case to be built to house the increasing selection of juvenile and adult DVDs.
John told the Board that the main IRS forms have been received, but that the IRS was not providing any
instruction booklets this year. The library has printed a copy of the 1040, 1040A, and 1040EZ instruction
booklets and made them available for the public to use as reference in the library or copies of what is needed
can be printed at ten cents per page. Other forms are accessible on the IRS website for which one computer is
solely designated at the IRS table near the front entrance to the library.
Dismissal was at 4:40 pm.
The next board meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2015.
