BOARD OF HEALTH
The monthly meeting of the Plainview -Hale County Health District
Board of Directors was called to order at approximately 12:30 P.M.,
December 7, 1989, at the Golden Corral Steakhouse, with Chairman
Lanny Voss presiding.
Those attending were: Chairman Lanny Voss, Mary Lou Truesdale, R.N.,
Kit Linton, M.D., James Belk, Lewellen Hooper, Donna Womble, R.N.,
Dr. Gary Abercrombie and Nina Morris. Also present were Ben Linton,
Medical Student Kim Peck and Secretary Billie Standfer.
Following the agenda, Chairman Voss called for review and comments
on the minutes of the last meeting. With no comments forthcoming,
he declared the minutes approved as presented.
He then called for`.review of the Expenditure Report. Motion was made
by Lewellen Hooper and seconded by Dr. Linton to pay the monthly bills.
A vote by the board carried this motion.
Chairman Voss explained that a letter of resignation had been received
from former Board member, Weaver Mc Clure. He asked for a motion to
accept this resignation. There was a motion by Dr. Abercrombie and
a second by Donna Womble to accept this. A vote by the Board carried
the motion.
Mrs. Truesdale shared with the Board a plan to secure a replacement
for Mr. Mc Clure. She stated that she had noticed an agenda item
for the City Council's work session for Board appointments, and that
City Manager Jim Jeffers had indicated a replacement from the Food
Establishment Industry was '',being sought.
In Dr. Lyons' absence, Mrs. Truesdale explained that no serious ill-
nesses were present in the community; but indicated that Strep infec-
tion was prevalent.
Chairman Voss asked Mrs. Truesdale to continue with her report.
Mrs. Truesdale spoke of a "planned agenda item" for the next Board
meeting. This, she explained, would be for a revision of timing for
the permitting of Food Establishments - a "staggered" method; a plan
to issue permits for a year from the date it was purchased.
She told Board .members that she had interviewed two applicants for
the Sanitarian position, but had no male applicants. She explain-
ed that both applicants had examinations to take,and successfully
pass, before she could offer either of them the position. She said
she sould know something on this in the next two weeks.
Her report continued as she shared the information that Lee Whitacre,
R.N., the Department's Nurse Practitioner, was (at the School's re-
quest) presenting topics at Ash Elementary. School - the Sixth Grade
learning center - on Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
to two Health Classes. She explained that there were students in this
school that were sexually active, and emphasized how very important
this training was tothese students. She stated that if the students
did not get this training at home, they should receive it at school.
Her concern was the reaction of the community to these sessions. A
discussion on this subject followed.
Chairman Voss asked Dr. Linton to introduce her guest. Dr. Linton
introduced Medical Student Kim Peck; a fourth year Med Student at
Texas Tech.
After extending excused absences for Dr. C.L. Busby, Dr. Mary Bublis
and Vice Chairman Dorothy Tilson, Chairman Voss adjourned the meeting.
