DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON LIBRARY ACTIVITIES

The PLAINVIEW DAILY HERALD is now sent to be microfilmed every two months.
The costs are shared with Wayland Baptist University.
The FICTION collection is now an integrated one--i.e., Mysteries, Westerns,
Science Fiction, Romance and Short Stories are intershelved with the
Fiction collection and are identified by bold red initials placed above
the book number on the spine. All fiction will have author numbers to
facilitate locating a particular title.
BIOGRAPHIES are shelved with the discipline of the biographee(s)--e.g.,
a biography of a cancer patient will be classed with "cancer" --and will
be identified by a bold red "B" placed above the call # on the spine.
Biographies of a person or persons not associated with a particular
discipline will be classed in 921 (individual) or 920 (collective).
The JUVENILE areahas been expanded. It has been defined as including materials
up through junior high school and consists of three separate cataloged
divisions:
EASY (PICTURE BOOK)
predominantly picture book format
generally up to a third gradereading level
JUVENILE FICTION
JUVENILE NON-FICTON
biographies will be classed as in the adult collection
A collection of juvenile uncataloged paperbacks (including teen romances)
is available.
Books aimed at "young adults" or high school students will be shelved in
the adult collection (with no special markings).
The SPANISH book collection has been defined and will be expanded.
The LARGE TYPE book collection is identified as such and will be expanded.
MCNAUGHTON LEASED BOOKS and NEW BOOKS are located in separate collections
near the main entry. The leased collection will be evaluated over the
next year and recomme"'dations made on its continuance or termination.
New books will remain on the new book shelf for approximately two months.
Both collections are alphabetized by author's last name regardless of
classification.
Cards for books ON ORDER are filed in alphabetical order by title in the
appropriate (i.e., adult or juvenile) card catalog.
The juvenile card catalog has been physically lowered to allow access by the
intended age group.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT, November 18, 1983

The GENEALOGY collection will be moved to the south section of the balcony
for several reasons:
1) space --there will be roughly ten times more space than the collection
now has. The current collection is now in cramped quarters with
no room for growth.
2) quiet --most genealogy work is research and this section of the
library should prove to be quieter than that currently next to
the periodical area.
3) security --because the genealogy collection is a non -circulating
reference collection, moving the collection to the balcony should
discourage use by those who are not really interested in genealogy --
this is not to say that the genealogy collection will have restricted
access, but that the collection isn't really a "browsing" one;
with most volumes being fairly expensive and by limiting the collection
to serious users this change should benefit all concerned.
The REFERENCE COLLECTION has been moved from next to the juvenile collection
to its current location in the old part of the building. There are now
tables at which to sit and use the reference materials.
COLLEGE CATALOGS for all of the colleges, universities, and junior colleges
in the area have been ordered and will be available in the reference
collection.
TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES for all of the cities in the surrounding area have been
ordered; also directories for all major cities in Texas and a few in
New Mexico and Oklahoma have been ordered. These directories will be
available in the reference collection.
The PERIODICAL and NEWSPAPER collections are being evaluated and some changes
will be forthcoming. We have begun subscriptions to USA Today, the Dallas
Morning News, and Esquire magazine.
A major WEEDING (de -selection) project has begun. Many items in the collection
are "dead weight"--e.g., out of date materials and worn out materials
(possibly to be replaced), etc. In conjunction with this major weeding
project, new items will be ordered to update the collection. In the
future, weeding will be done continually, one section at a time on a
rotating basis. Most weeded items will be available at the library's book
sale --to be announced at a later date.
New CARD CATALOGS (adult and juvenile) have been created. All new materials
and all materials already in the collection which have been "retrospectively"
cataloged will have cards in the new card catalog(s). Also, the old card
catalogs have been closed--i.e., no new materials will be added to them
and cards will be with drawn as appropriate and as time permits.
Improved SERVICES are forthcoming as soon as the collection is made more
accessible for both patrons and for staff.
We now have a SUGGESTION BOX located at the information/circulation desk
so patrons can suggest specific titles, authors, or subjects that they
would like to see in the collection.
