HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-12-1995 Library Board MinutesSeptember 12, 1995 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the Storytime area of the library with the following attending: Geoff Wells, Rita Cronholm and Albert Torres, Library Board members; Joy Denton, president of Hi -Plains Genealogy; Lucile Davis, WTLS lay representative; Muff London, directory for COmmunity Development for the City of Plainview and John Sigwald, librarian of UML. John told about the recent bookdrop vandalism and the fact that the sanitation dept. welded it for us and also made anew ramp for the bookdrop to help to care for the books. Minnie Ruth Rigler's retirement reception from Literacy Council is tonight from 6 to 7:30pm. Jessica Lloyd is the new coordinator of the Literacy Council since June 1995. ESL is becoming a larger part of this program. Joy Denton is now our alternate WTLS lay representative. Junior Service League has donated money for new laser printer. Friends of UML supplemented this fund and we have now resumed publication of UML newsletter monthly. About 60 people are on a mailing list and receive this as well as Council and Dept. heads at City Hall, newspaper editor, library board and Friends Board members. John told about new World Book encyclopedia on reference computer system. It is being used extensively and seems to be workign exceptionally well. John announced that prospects of receiving funding for carpet and interior painting are looking favorable. When approval is received from City Council bids will be solicited for carpet for entire first floor and basement. John stated that he would get a committee to choose the carpet. Muff suggested that the library ask for a deposit for meeting room --if left clean deposit would be returned, if not, deposit would be kept to pay for cleaning. Policy to cover this will be discussed and considered at next month's meeting. John stated that possible help in painting walls and moving books for these projects could come from prisoners from Wheeler Unit with supervision. City maintained $5000. for literacy coordinator position. United Way approved raising their portion from $9000 to $12,000. Budget for upcoming year should include $24,500 for books - up $1000. from this year. John attended ALA Annual conference in Chicago during summer. He talked about growing corporate sponsorship in library services. UML has a new video list and revised accelerated reader list now avaiible. Meeting was adjourned.
