Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library
with following attending: Geoff Wells, Rita Cronholm and Albert Torres, Library
Board members ; Nancy Cox, president of Friends of UML; Joy Denton, president
of High Plains Genealogy; LUcile Davis, WTLS lay representative and John
Sigwald, Librarian of UML.
John announced there will be no planned Board meetings during the summer months.
Board meetings will resume in September 1995.
Chairs in front of the Information Desk on the main floor have been reupholstered.
All remarks have been favorable thus far. Friends of the Library paid for this
to be done with Rita Cronholm coordinating the effort. More chairs hopefully
will be done in the future.
Front windows (facing the North) have been washed professionally.
Quilts are on display and information sheets are available through the
month of May. Quilts have been displayed for about 10-11 years by
Creative Quilters.
Reading Club will be held June 1-30, 1995 each Monday through Friday from
10-11 am. Community people will be presenting programs for each of the 22
days.
John talked about stolen magazines in UML. The Library has had some problems
with this in the past. Magazines are hard to replace. We do mark materials
(magazines, special issues, etc.) that we think are possible prospects for
theft. We have had 3 instances of attempted theft in the last week. Two were
juveniles and one was 17 years of age. We do call the police and charges are
filed when this occurs. All magazines are embossed with Unger Memorial Library.
Sometimes, people tear off embossing and mail labels --some tear out pages
from magazines. It has been suggested to John that "High Theft" items should
be kept under the counter at the Frost Desk.
John said he has finished his term on the Notable Recordings for Children
Committee for ALA and is now on the Social Issues in Relation to Materials
for Children for ALA.
Minnie Ruth Rigler has resigned as coordinagor of the Hale County Literacy
Program. May 23, 1995 will be her last day. Permission to hire a replacement
has been received from City Hall.
UML will sponsor a Blood Drive on Friday, May 26, 1995 from 9 to 6 in basement.
Volunteers to help with clerical end of drive will need to attend a short
workshop prior to that date. We have 3 people who have given blood at each
of the 8 drives UML has had thus far. They are Gina Blllington, Rey Rosas,
and Dennis Harkins. Each has given 1 gallon of blood and will be featured
in the next few days in an article and picture in the Plainview Herald.
Friends of UML recently purchased a new monitor for the REFERENCE computer
center to replace one that finally went out. Also in that area John had to
replace one hard drive in the CD-ROM computers.
John talked about his Budget proposals for the next fiscal year. He is asking
City Hall for a fund ($2000) for computer maintenance. Carpet and painting
for the library at a cost of approx. $30-40,000. as a capital funds item

has been requested. Carpeting for basement and main floor was
measured and an estimate of $23,000 given, with a possibility of
another $4000. needed to remove asbestos tile if that is necessary.
An expanded CD-ROM system (new larger tower) at cost of $22,000 as
another capital funds item. John explained this is the future of
library services. John said he is asking for more book money. This
year's budget was for $23,500 for books and he is requesting $26,000.
for next year. We have no elevator maintenance and must have an
elevator maintenance contract. Laser printers to replace old printers
is another request. John said he is requested an increase from the
City for Literacy personnel salary. Also, he is requesting travel
budget increase from $938. to $2000. and $500. for microfilming
old Plainview Reporter -News (have found Vera Wofford has nearly
a full run of these and will donate to UML). John explained again
that these are his preliminary requested and must go through several
phases before they will be possibly be presented to the City
Council for consideration.
Meeting was adjourned.
