UML; Minnie Ruth Rigler, coordinator of Hale County Literacy Council;
Muff London, director of Community Development for the City of Plainview,
and John Sigwald, Librarian of Unger Memorial Library

Meeting tonight at City Hall for her 4 years service as president of
Friends of Unger Memorial Library.
John read from a letter from the president of American Library Assn.
regarding federal funding for library advocacy being raised from 57'
to $1.00 per capita.
Retrospective cataloging is complete. Paperbacks have only minimal
information (author & title) and videos will have subject headings
added as we can.
John, Sue and Sally went to Texas Library Association in Dallas
last week (April 4-7). Friends of UML gave $50. each to Sue Roth
and Sally Tueling to help with expenses. Texas Library Assn. is
one of the largest state associations --there were approx. 6000
in attendance this year. Various authors and other dignitaries
of various kinds are always there as speakers and presenters of
workshops. John attended a program this year regarding censorship
in libraries with regard to new age electronics. This was presented
the ACLU president regarding 1st Amendment rights. Several hundred
vendors of all types have exhibits.

Friends of the Library annual book sale took in $1933.70 this year.
Leadership Plainview will be touring Unger Library tomorrow morning.
Budget for UML for next fiscal year is being started at this time.
It is a Line Item Budget and must be ok'd by several people at
City Hall before going to City Council for approval. John stated
that his priority is expanding Reference CD -ROM --we need more slots
for discs. On-line services are probably not acquirable anytime soon
for UML as they are very expensive. The CD-ROMs provide information
locally and greatly expand library services. John stated that he will -
be getting new estimates for carpeting and painting the interior of the
main floor with hopes of getting these funded next year.
Meeting was adjourned.
