HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-14-1995 Library Board MinutesFebruary 14, 1995 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the Pre -School area on the mezzanine of the Library with the following attending: Geoff Wells, Treva James and Rita Cronholm,(library Board members); Ruth Gooch, president of Friends of UML ; Irene Favila, City Council liaison ; Lucile Davis, WTLS lay representative ; Muff London, directory of COmmunity Development for the City of Plainview and John Sigwald, Librarian of Unger Library. John told of his trip last week to ALA -Midwinter in Philadelphia. This was John's last year on the Notable Recordings Committee. He showed those present an example of the recorded books that were part of what he received to evaluate. He received about 60 of these which have been placed in the UML collection. They would have cost approx. $1500. had the Library paid for them. GED classes sponsored by MET are being held in the basement of the Library at this time and will continue through the middle of March. Irene Favila stated that SWTSU from San Marcos is paying the instructor for this group of student and MET is talking now with Wayland University and hopes that WBU will sponsor this in the future and will furnish space for the program to be held. MET will track the students for about three months after the classes to see how many do pass the tests. John told those present about the partition in the basement. It was built with Literacy paying $500, Friends of UML paying $200. and the City paying the rest ($438.75). . It makes the space much more usable. Work on the Handicapped Access Bathroom will start tomorrow. John stated that he will ask for money next fiscal year to get automatic opener for the inside front door. John told of the new videos the Library has for the blind and the materials that are available from Texas State Library for the blind. We are weeding and re -labeling the Adult Non -Fiction section and will continue that project. John hopes to resume the Newsletter in March, 1995. Genealogical Society is buying a new computer for the Genealogy area. Ruth told about Lubbock genealogy people who were here and how very complimentary they were regarding the entire library and especially the Genealogy section.. John said the Juvenile picture book section has been weeded recently to make way for new books. The Advisory Board will meet again on March 14, 1995. That date is also the UML Friends annual meeting prior to the annual Book Sale to be held on March 24 and 25th. Friends of UML magazine sale held on Saturday, February 11, 1995 was a success. Magazines are available for sale in the hall of the Library as an on-going project of the Friends throughout the year. Meeting was adjourned.
