ADVISORY COMMITTEE
May 2, 1977
The regular meeting of the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Com-
mittee was called to order by Mrs. Merwyn Igo, President, at
7:10 p. m. Monday, May 2, 1977, in the Librarian's Office.
Present were Malcolm Tisdel, David Wilson, Lloyd Woods, and Judy
Smith, Librarian. Also present was Charley Schulz.
The minutes of the meeting of April 4, 1977, were approved as
presented.
The regular order of business was waived so that Mr. Schulz could
address the Committee. Mr. Schulz brought the Library's copy of
Sex and the Liberated Man and stated that he thought the book
should not be in the Library. He expressed concern that high
school students might discover the book and stated that in his op-
inion it was not suitable for high school students.
Mr. Tisdel explained that the book in question is a McNaughton
book and,therefore, the Library did not purchase it. Mrs. Igo
read the Library's Materials Selection Policy and explained the
American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement. The
Committee stated, "Cenorship of children's reading materials is
a parental decision." Mr. Schulz was thanked for his coming to
express his concern.
The Librarian's report for April was presented.
The Committee discussed the letter which had been sent to the
City Council about the paving of the parking lot. On behalf of
the Committee Mrs. Igo thanked Lloyd Woods for his efforts in
getting the paving project approved.
Miss Smith announced that Jane Vaughan will be in charge of the
1977 Summer 4Program. All films have been reserved and showings
will begin June 8. Arrangements for the Summer Program have
been made at each of the particapating libraries.ff
Mrs. Igo opened the floor for discussion on limited succession
in the holding of office do the Committee. The Committee decided
that succession should not be limited.
Miss Smith presented the copies of the final budget request for
1977. She will prepare statistial material for the Committee
hearing with the City Council.

Mrs. Igo presented a letter to be sent to school principals in
August. The letter requests their help in urging teachers to
inform the'brary of upcoming projects and to supply the Library
with copies of reading lists.
The meeting was adjourned at 9 p. m.
