HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-14-2012 Library Board MinutesLibrary Board Meeting February 14, 2012 Present at the meeting were outgoing President, Sharon Morgan; Board members Kevin Sweeney, Kenna Hatch, David Barrett (new), Stephanie James (new) and Melissa Wilkinson (new). Also attending were Friends of UML President, Kim Horne, WTLS Lay Representative, Lucile Davis, and President of the Hi -Plains Genealogical Society, Carolyn Courtney. The meeting started with John introducing all who were present. Plaques were presented to former Board members Sharon Morgan and Kim Horne for their service on the Library Advisory Board. New officers were nominated by David Barrett and seconded by Stephanie James. Those nominated were accepted by acclamation --President: Kevin Sweeney; Vice President: Kenna Hatch. John advised the Board that the West Texas Library System (WTLS) would no longer be in existence sometime in the near future. The State had cut this part of the budget by 67% and it is no longer feasible to remain in operation. John mentioned eBook borrowing through the Lubbock Public Library who is letting UML "piggyback" on their collection. The process information for the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble NOOK has been made available in the last two UML newsletters and an article on the front page of the Plainview Herald (Friday, February 10, 2012). There is also an information sheet available at the front desk. The new lighting fixture and window projects have been completed. They were funded by the federal Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant received by the City. Jodi Thomas, a romance author from the Amarillo area, will be at UML on Thursday, February 23 at 2:00 pm to meet with the public. She will be selling books and autographing them. The Friends of UML annual book sale will be March 30-31. The week prior to this is set aside for Friends and volunteers to work on getting the books organized and set up for the sale. The Texas Library Association Conference will be in Houston April 17-20. John, and probably staff members Debbie Carlton and Regina Lucio, will be attending. Any Board members interested in attending this conference are to contact John. 2013 will be the centennial recognition for UML as a public library in Plainview. Plans for an Open House or some other celebration are pending. The next meeting will be in May. Dismissal was at 4:55.
