UML Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in
attendance: Board members David Isaacson, Sharon Morgan, Hayley Cox and Kathy
Azua; WTLS lay -representative Lucile Davis; Hi -Plains Genealogy Society President
Theresa Dunlap; Friends of UML President Marsha Birdsong; Hale County Literacy
Council coordinator Phyllis Wall and Librarian John Sigwald.
New members to the Board, Hayley Cox and Kathy Azua, were welcomed. They, along
with Sharon Morgan who is starting her first full term on the Board after finishing -out a
partial term, read aloud individually and in unison the Board member oath of office as
required by the City of Plainview.
It was announced that the Board needed to elect officers for the coming 2 year period.
After discussion, Hayley Cox presented a slate of officers (David Issacson—President
and Sharon Morgan—Vice-President/Secretary) and moved they be accepted by
acclamation. The motion carried.
John took pictures of the Board members individually and as a group.
John gave the Board information about manga books (Japanese graphic novels) that
are being added to the Library adult fiction section. The ones being added at this time
are primarily aimed at young adult readers.
John also explained to the Board that the library's dvd collection is being expanded by
purchasing movies from the American Film Institute 100 Best of All -Time list and
others from another Internet movie database that shows the top 250+ films as voted on
by the public. No R or higher rated movies are being purchased.
John told the Board that state money will be cut. No definite dollar cuts have been
made yet, but they are expected. West Texas Library system funds will be less in the
future ; Loan Star Grants (which we have received for the last 3 years) will probably be
for smaller amounts of money. UML share to receive TexShare databases for use in
the Library for both staff and patrons will be increasing from $500. per year to 51000.
per year.
John will be attending ALA Conference in Orlando, FL in June. He is presently serving
on two national committees—one dealing with web sites for kids and the other on
selection of dvds for young adults.
John told those present that the new "NO FOOD, DRINK OR CELL PHONES" rule is
working quite well. He also told them about newest staff member Chelsie Hicks ; a
new Information sheet with new photos and the new City Manager Greg Ingham.
Next regular meeting of Board will be in September 2004.
Meeting adjourned.
