HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-13-2001 Library Board MinutesTuesday, February 13, 2001 4 pm Unger Memorial LibraryAdvisory Board met in the Library basement with the following in attendance: Board members David Isaacson, Maisie Jones, Sharon Morgan, Barbara Green; WTLS lay rep Lucile Davis; Friends of UML President Minnie Ruth Rigler; Director of Community Development John Castro and Librarian John Sigwald. John showed those in attendance the February newsletter. John told about attending the American Library Association Midwinter Conference in Washington, DC. John is secretary for the Advisory Committee on Cataloguing. He attended workshops and visited vendors. Unger Library has recently been a Beta test site for a new version of the Spectrum software. One of the new parts of the progam is Visual Search in the catalog --images are used to represent various types of materials. The software company has given this new feature to the library. A new version is due any day. UML collection of Plainview High School yearbooks was recently increased when 1979 and 1983 were donated. John explained that UML has applied for E -rate funding which would be worth approx. $3000. per year for UML. The E -Rate and the Children's Internet Protection Act are linked at the present time. This requires libraries, etc. to provide filters or not get E -rate funding. John said we can probably avoid filters for one year while checking into filters, etc. ALA is presently working to get this overturned --censorship issue. John has been contacted by numerous software companies. John is looking at privacy screens --could make them optional. John talked about the Universal Computers Information Transaction Act -- has to do with problems with copyrights. John explained that the Library is information -providing business. Texas Library Association Conference will be in. San Antonio on March 28-31. John encouraged Board members to attend. National Library Week is April 1-7, 2001. Junior Service League,has been asked for a grant to buy sets of=videos. "Go Figure" an interactive children's math exhibit will be on display at UML from March 8 -April 19. We will be encourageing school field trips. An open house will be held during the display. John asked for feedback regarding the newsletters. Next Library Board meeting will be May 8, 2001. Friend of UML Annual meeting will be held March 22, 2001. Annual Book Sale of Friends will be March 30-31. Meeting was adjourned.
