HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-13-1998 Library Board MinutesOctober 13, 1998 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green and David Isaacson; Friends of UML Presidents Phil and Nancy Cox; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis and Librarian John Sigwald. John told the Board about Matt Blackerby's Eagle Scout project --indexing the Hale County History volumes. We are now getting this information into a database and hope to be able to index the Plainview Daily Herald in the future. John explained to the Board that a patron had questioned adult books -on -tape not being labeled to show content, etc. John talked with the gentleman explaining library policy. Patron was told that he could take his complaint to the Board by filling out the proper papers, thus far he has not done so. The Board agreed that the library was not a "Censor"; staff not advisers about appropriate reading material; and that we should not label materials. John said that he will be working right away on a new Information Sheet to be given out. It will include that parents are responsible for what materials are checked out by their children. John told the Board that the following capital items were approved for FY 1998-99: new computer for Librarian $2500. (his old one will be moved to front desk for another Internet computer --phone line has been funded and Herald will furnish Internet service.) Fax $ 300. Door opener for inside $2000. front door Literacy $1000. Some line items have been increased: Books from $27,000 to $28,000. Travel from $1800. to $2400. We closed out the Fiscal Year 1997-98 with approximately 97-98% of our budget spent. Trying to be sure and keep line items from going over budget too much, we underspent some others. John explained to the Board that reimbursements do not always into the expense accounts which makes keeping track more difficult. John will be attending a Bluebonnet Committee meeting in Austin on October 16-18. Meeting was adjourned.
