Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the
Library with the following in attendance: Board Members Geoff
Wells, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green, Caroline Kopp and David Isaacsen;
Director of Community Services John Castro; President of Hi -Plains
Genealogical Society Mary Ann McWilliams; WTLS lay representative

severely a few weeks back in a domestic argument and told about
the fund that has been set up through the West Texas Federal
Credit Union to help her with expenses.
Debby Gibson was unable to attend this meeting due to illness, so
John told everyone about Panhandle -Plains Literacy Day to be held
on Friday, September 18, 1998. Laura Bush, First Lady of Texas,
will read to PEAKS second -graders in the juvenile area of the Library
at 10 a.m. and will also speak at a luncheon at 011ie Liner Center.
John explained that a patron had questioned some of the juvenile books -on -
tape. Those materials have been separated into two groups and marked
accordingly--J=Juvenile (Grades 3-8) and Y=Young Adult (Grades 7-12).
All are still shelved in the Juvenile section. He explained that
young adult materials are usually thought to be for 12 years and up thus
sometimes wind up in Juvenile collections and other times in Adult.
More shelves for the Adult Books -on -Tape have been built by Hershel
Henderson and paid for by the Friends of UML. This doubled the space
that those materials which are becoming very popular. John explained
that the Library has not purchased many of these materials as we have
individuals who donate these to the Library.
John explained that the Adult collection has been re -arranged and
shelves re -labeled. Weeding is always necessary as new books are
added and re -labeling of the non-fiction books is still ongoing.
Hopefully the bright new signs on the ends of the shelves will
help patrons to find materials more readily.
