Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the balcony area
of the library with the following in attendance :
Board members Maisie Jones and Barbara Green ; John Castro, Director
of Community Services ; Phil Cox, President of Friends of UML ;
June Wells, President of Hi -Plains Genealogy Society ; WTLS lay
representatives Lucile Davis and Joy Denton, and Librarian John
Sigwald.
John reported the Friends of UML Annual Book Sale had a profit of
$2470. Good publicity and workers made this another successful sale.
Boxes have been purchased for sorting the books in the future and
the sorting room is being reorganized to make preparation for the
sale easier.
John, Sue and Debby attended Texas Library Association Annual Conference
in San Antonio April 1-4, 1998. Many programs and exhibits were available
for everyone. John, as a Texas Bluebonnet Committee member, attended
the Texas Bluebonnet Luncheon and also had dinner one night with the
winning author, Betsy Byars. During General Session II (on Friday, 4/3/98)
Texas Book Festival grants were announced by Laura Bush, First Lady of
Texas and John was there to stand and be acknowledged with the other
Winners.
Texas Book Festival grant in the amount of $2500. has been received and
with $2500. donated by the Friends of UML and $2000. transferred from
the Library Non -Book account, The Grove's Dictionary of Art has been
purchased and is now in the Reference Section of the Library.
John gave a tour of the Library to Leadership Plainview on Thursday, 4/8/98.
Reading Club at Unger Library will be held daily during June. This year
we will be participating in a pilot program of Reading Rainbow "Math Is
Everywhere".
John gave all present copies of the proposed UML budget for the next fiscal
year. This year that proposal includes a 5 year plan for the Library.
Various proposed line items were discussed. All agreed increases, particularly
books, are necessary. Other items proposed were discussed --Heated sidewalk
would certainly be nice --Fax machine could be used at the Front Desk as an
additional phone line would be needed and that would enable us to have
Internet connection there also.
