Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with
the following present: Board members Geoff Wells, Maisie Jones, David Isaacson,
and Barbara Green; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis; Joy Denton,
representing Hi -Plains Genealogy Society; former Board member Rita Cronholm;
John Castro, Director of Community Services for the City of Plainview; and John Sigwald,
Librarian.
John welcomed new Board member David Isaacson.
Maisie Jones asked if there are any rules regarding duties, attendance,
etc. of Library Board members. Sue Roth will check on this. John Castro asked
to be notified of results of this search.
Geoff Wells agreed to continue as President of the Board for the next 2 years.
Maisie Jones agreed to serve as Vice -President for the 2 year period.
John Sigwald told those present about his trip to American Library Association
Midwinter Conference in New Orleans in January. He is on the Library of Congress
cataloguing and publications advisory group and has been nominated for the
Newbery Committee. He explained the functions of the two major conferences of ALA each ye
--Midwinter is mostly meetings and Summer is more programs and events.
John explained the process of "weeding" the collection.
John has applied for a Junior Service League grant in the amount of $500.
for the purpose of having more posters framed. He also applied for a Texas
Book Festival award in the amount of $2500. which would go with money
from the Friends of UML and the Library's video budget line item to purchase
a Groves' Dictionary of Art (34 volume reference material) that would cost $7000. total.
John showed everyone a copy of the "American Libraries" magazine -November 1997
issue with a picture of John and JSL member showing last year's Junior Service League
gift of READ posters (framed) --these were purchased with JSL grant.
John showed a letter as example of the new color printer in the workroom.
John is working on an Internet policy and will print and sent to each member with
next month's Board meeting letter. It can then be examined, changed, etc.
and a policy adopted. The Library has had few problems thus far. John
said he feels the Internet is in the Library and is promoted here as a reference
tool (primarily information retrieval).
John presented Rita Cronholm a plaque thanking her for 10 years service
on the Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board - 1988-1997.
