Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with
the following present: Board members Caroline Kopp, Maisie Jones and Barbara
Green; WTLS lay representative Lucile Davis; John Castro, Director of Community
Services for the City of Plainview; and John Sigwald, Librarian.
John welcomed everyone back after the summer without meetings of the Board.
John gave a review of some of the Library's projects during the summer months:
Summer Reading Club for elementary students was held daily during the month of
June with hour-long programs each day; Hale County Literacy Council sponsored
the appearance of Miss America at the 011ie Liner Center in July; John with
the help of Jennifer Trudeau (Karen's daughter) worked on weeding the non-fiction
collection and other projects including indexing 3 months of the Plainview Daily
Herald (this is on-going and John is presently trying to determine complete
guidlines for this project). Maisie Jones suggested that only Hale County
articles be indexed.
John announced that the Hale County Literacy Fair will be held on Saturday,
October 4, 1997 from 10-2- at the 011ie Liner Center_
John continues with his Texas Bluebonnet Award committee work. He had a meeting
in Austin in July and will have another meeting of this committee on November
1, 1997 in Austin.
John and Sue are supposed to go to Dallas to Interlibrary Loan training on
October 6 and 7. Final details have not been set yet.
John read from an "Ann Landers" column with regard to children being left in
public libraries for "babysitting". He stated that kids are not left outside
the Library when we close. We try to be sure that everyone has a ride before
closing time and if, by chance, someone is not picked up on time, the plan
is in place to take children across to the Police Station until someone comes
for them.
John told of some new WEB sites available now --one has site of libraries
with maps (UNger is on this). Texas State Library is paying for libraries
(ours is one) to have access to some sites that would cost hundreds of dollars
per year.
Next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 1997.
