Unger Memorial Library AdxTisory Board met in the basement of the Library with
the following present: Board member Maisie Jones, Lu"ile Davis and Joy Denton,
WTLS lay representatives; Phil Cox, president of Friends of UML, Debby Gibson,
director of Hale County Literacy Council; June Wells, president of Hi -Plains
Genealogical Society and John Sigwald, Librarian_
There was not a quorum present.
John gave brief information regarding agenda items_as follows:
Brief overview of proposed 1997-1998 budget including goals and objectives for
Unger Library.
Karen Trudeau has been hired - been at the library on staff approx. one month -
previously has done volunteer work here for several years.
Third Thursday program sponsored by Hale COunty Literacy was explained to those
present_ Also Hale County Literacy director Debby Gibson and John told of Miss
America coming to Plainview on Thursday, July 10, 1997 - program will be at 7pm
in 011ie Liner Center_ Debby invited Board members to come (everyone is welcome)
and said Board members will be recognized at the program_
John and Sue attended TLA in Fort Worth during April _ It was a very good
conference and both enjoyed the various speakers, etc_
Business After Hours was held in the Library on March 27, 1997. Approx. 100
attended. John again thanked the Kopps for underwriting this for the Library.
The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale was held on April 4 and 5, 1997. It
was the most successful ever_ Approx. $2500. total income from the sale_
Kids Connect_._ essay contest was held recently _ It was well received locally and
prizes for the local winners (t -shirts) and participants (buttons) were provided
by the Friends of UML_ All entries were sent on to the national contest_
Joy Denton has taken over the magazine sale for the Friends_ She is in need of
magazines_ Last year's income from the magazine sales was approx. $800_+.
Texas BLood Institute blood drive will be held at the Library on Friday, May 23,
1997 from 9-6.
Summer Reading Club will be held at the Library daily (Monday thru Friday) during
June from 10 to 11 am. Daily programs are planned and everyone is welcome _
ALA Conference will be held in San Francisco June 16 through July 3, 1997_
No meetings will be planned during the summer. Next board meeting will be
held in September 1997.
