HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-12-1996 Library Board Minutes11-12-96 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Barbara Green and Caroline Kopp; Friends of UML president Phil Cox; Hale County Literacy coordinator Debby Gibson; WTLS lay -representative Lucile Davis and Librarian John Sigwald. Rey Rosas, City Council liaison was also in attendance. John gave out copies (see attached) of an article that was in the Dallas Morning News on November 3, 1996. Title of the article is "The Future is an Open Book : Computers seem destined to complement libraries, not replace them". John attended a Texas Bluebonnet Award committee meeting on October 26 in Austin. They worked on next year's master list for the following year's Bluebonnet Award. Unger Library is having a pilot program with home schoolers locally so that they may participate in the voting for the Texas Bluebonnet Award. Voting for the award is done in January each year, with the Award announced in February. John attended a "Troubleshooting and Maintenance of IBM PCs and Compatibles" workshop in Amarillo on November 6-7_ He hopes to put some of the things he learned into use in keeping all the Library's computers in good working order. Texas Library Association Intellectual Freedom workshop will be held in Austin on December 13th and 14th. Theme is "Defending the Right to Know..." . John and Nancy Hill (West Texas Library System coordinator) will represent this area. John hope to use information from this workshop to help him formulate future policies for INTERNET use at Unger Library. A second Internet computer workstation has been added -- it shares a printer with the original Internet computer and has the fastest modem available. Unger Library is the first library in this area to offer Internet access as a library service. Library open house to celebrate the remodeling has been set for Wednesday, December 4, 1996 from 5 to 7 pm. Friends of the UML will host_ Caroline Kopp has arranged for various musical entertainment during the open house_ Phil and Nancy Cox, Sue Roth and others will coordinate this function. Unger Library will host the March 27, 1997 Business After Hours. Caroline '160p is coordinating this_ John announced the Blood Drive to be held at the Library on Wednesday, November 27, 1997. Friends of UML recently furnished a new sofa for the Staff break room_ Rita Cronholm was responsible for finding it and her husband Greg and Phil Cox transported it to the Library. There will be no Board meeting in December. Next meeting will be January 14, 1997_ John showed the plaque the Hale COunty Literacy Council recently presented to John Sigwald and Unger M emorial for "Distinguished Service to Literacy". Rey Rosas took the plaque to show at tonight's Council meeting. The Library Christmas party will be held on Monday, December 16 at the Cotton Patch_ It will be dutch treat and all Board members and families and others who attend Board meetings are invited.
