HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-08-1996 Library Board Minutes10-08-96 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Rita Cronholm, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green and Caroline Kopp; Friends of UML president Phil Cox; Hi -Plains Genealogy president Joy Denton; Director of COmmunity Services for City of Plainview John Castro; and Librarian John Sigwald_ Debby Gibson (Hale County Literacy coordinator) was unable to attend today's meeting. Sue Roth gave a report on the Literacy Fair held on Saturday, Oct_ 5, 1996. Approximately 1400 people attended this year's fair_ There were 30 participants (Booths and displays)_ Debby indicated that everyone who had booths this year says they want to participate again next year and possibly expand their booths and displays_ Plainview Daily Herald had an INternet display this year and indicates that they will expand that display even more next year and be even more interactive_ Friends of the UML presidents Phil and Nancy Cox gave each child that attended the Fair a free book and also distributed posters to winners of the poster contests at the various schools --Debby asked that they be thanked publicly for this effort. John Sigwald showed those present a copy of a recent Plainview Herald article about the Internet that had a picture in color of Unger's homepage. He said the homepage is being revamped regularly --always trying to make it more usable by library patrons. He indicated that usage at this time is probably split fairly evenly between adult and juvenile patrons. John recently made a presentation about the Internet and our site to West Texas Library System meeting. Unger is the only WTLS library with Internet up and running at this time. Money has been budgeted this fiscal year for a second computer for Internet and should be up and going right away. John told the Board that he will be attending a Bluebonnet Committee meeting in Austin at the end of October_ The committee at that time will select the 20 books that will make up the 1997 MasterList for the 1998 Bluebonnet Award. Texas students in grades 3-6 will vote in January 1997 for the 1997 Bluebonnet winner and the award will be presented at Texas Library Assn. meeting in APril 1997_ Last year over 200,000 school children in Texas voted on this award_ To vote a student must read a minimum 5 of the 20 books on the list. John announced that due to confusion with the Chamber of Commerce, the Business after Hours that was scheduled for January 1997 at UML has been changed to March_ Friends of the Library, Board members and staff agreed to sponsor an open house in late November or December. Arrangements will be discussed and finalized at the November Board meeting_ Meeting was adjourned./
