HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-14-1996 Library Board Minutes5-14-96 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with the following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Barbara Green, Rita Cronholm and Caroline Kopp ; Friends of UML president Phil Cox ; City of Plainview Director of Community Services John Castro andCity Councilman Rey Rosas (library liaison); and Librarian John Sigwald Caroline Kopp was welcomed to the Board as a new member_ She will serve on the Board replacing Albert Torres with term ending 1-1-98. Maisie Jones had requested that discussion be held regarding having year-round Board meetings_ John brought the matter to the Board's attention and discussion followed_ Board President Geoff Wells stated that he felt that meetings should continue to be held as they have been and meetings could be called during the summer months if necessary_ This was agreed upon for the time being. Terry Clark has been hired to replace Toney Lynch as library assistant_ She is to start June 3, 1996. John reported on his trip to Texas Library Association in Houston in April. He attended several programs --many of which were connected to the Bluebonnet Committee since he has been appointed to that committee for a three year term_ Lubbock A -J and Amarillo Globe News have both recently had articles regarding Unger's INTERNET site_ Unger is the first (and only, thus far) library in West Texas to have a public INTERNET site_ Interest in INTERNET in Unger is growing_ John indicated that he is requesting funds for a second site in the fall. John again stated that children's usage of the INTERNET is their parent's responsibility. An Unger Library home page is now available due to the efforts of Rainer Sigwald (John's son). It will be expanded in the future. John stated that the INTERNET site is to be limited to information retrieval --no e-mail_ Vandals hit again last week. Graffitti on the west wall of the building has already been removed by a community service worker_ Unger's Memorial Day blood drive will be held in the basement of the Library on Friday, May 24, 1995 from 9-6. Plainview Junior Service League recently donated $700 to UML for CD-ROM drives for the reference section_ JSL has been very generous for a number of years and their donations have made possible many items that the Library could not have had otherwise_ Reading Club will again be held during June each day from 10-11 am. Joy Denton sent a letter to John Castro regarding janitorial work at the Library. He has shared that letter with Ches Carthel (City Engineer) and John Sigwald_ They are working on these problems_ John Castro feels community service workers will help_ He will talk to Judge Sullivan regarding hopefully having weekly workers so that regular scheduling for them can be done. John Sigwald told about Leadership Plainview recently having a tour of UML. The next regular meeting of the Board will be the 2nd Tues of September 1996_
