HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-09-1996 Library Board Minutes4-9-96 4 pm Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with following in attendance: Board members Geoff Wells, Barbara Green, Maisie Jones and Rita Cronholm ; Genealogy president Joy Denton, WTLS Lay representative Lucile Davis; City of Plainview director of Community Services John Castro and Librarian John Sigwald John went over the report that he presented to the Hale County Commissioners Court on MOnday, April 8, 1996_ This shows annual budget of approx_ $200,000_ with about 5% ($9500) paid by the county_ Steve Barrett from the Lubbock AJ was here today talking with John with regard to a possible article in the AJ on the library's new INTERNET site_ John has been selected to serve a three year term on the Texas Bluebonnet Award Committee_ Texas is the largest award of this kind --3rd thru 6th graders vote on the winner from a list prepared by the Committee_ To vote the student must have read at least 5 of the 20 books on the List_ Voting is done through the schools_ Friends of UML annual book sale held March 29-30, 1996 was the best ever_ They cleared over $2200_ the "$1 fill -your -own bag" sale held on Monday after the main sale was also very successful_ Hale County jail did the clean-up this year_ Wheeler Unit of TDCJ indicated they might be interested in leftovers (clean-up) next year, but if did not want the books could provide manpower to help community organization to move the books_ John will attend Texas Library Association conference in Houston April 23-26, 1996_ Toney Lynch is retiring from Unger Library the end of April, 1996_ A retirement reception will be held at the library on Sunday, April 28, 1996 from 2-4 pm_ Friends of the UML are funding the reception. Unger's public access INTERNET site is up and going_ the only expense is approx. $20_ per month for the phone line_ Plainview Herald is furnishing Internet through the Lonestar BBS_ Laser printer (donated by the Friends of UML) is in place -- copies are 10per sheet_ John discussed his proposed budget requests for next fiscal year. Other than routine line items, he is asking for several other items_ Top of that list is a microfiche reader -printer to replace the old one the Library has had for many years that is practically unusable (gets hot when used)_ Other items included a second INTERNET site (computer and monitor), postage increase to cover mailing of monthly newsletters, vacuum cleaner ( a must when new carpet is installed),additienal money for salary in Hale County Literacy coordinator position, etc_ Meeting was adjourned_
