Unger Memorial Library Advisory Board met in the basement of the Library with
the following attending: Board members Geoff Wells, Maisie Jones, Barbara Green
and Rita Cronholm; Joy Denton, president of Hi -Plains Genealogy; Debby Gibson,
Hale County Literacy Council coordinator; Lucile Davis, West Texas Library System
lay representative; and John Sigwald, Librarian_ Rey Rosas , City Council member,
has been recently appointed as library board liaison and was in attendance at
today's meeting.
John introduced those present_ Geoff Wells, recently re -appointed to Library
Board, and Maisie Jones, new member of Board, were sworn in and took the Oath
of Office. Barbara Green had previously been sworn in as a new member of the
Library Board during a recent City Council meeting_
John announced that John Castro is now officially supervisor of this department.
John told those present about Ann Hastings having a serious stroke today_ Ann
has been an RSVP volunteer at the Library for over 12 years_
Maisie Jones made a motion that Geoff Wellsbe elected President of the UML
Advisory Board and Rita Cronholm be elected as Vice -President of the UML Advisory
Board by acclamation_ Barbara Green seconded the motion. The motion passed_
Geoff and Rita will serve for a two year period in these offices_
John explained his recent trip to American Library Association Midwinter Conference
in San ANtonio_ He explained that there are 100s of vendors at the exhibits at
ALA conferences and this gives him a good chance to meet people from various companies
who can be of help when the Library needs both items purchased and technical support_
John serves on various committees that meet at the various ALA conferences during
the year. He is a member of Public Library Assn. and Library Services for CHildren
which are parts of the American Library Association_At the conference in January,
John registered for and won a Pentium 133 computer from OCLC_ It is to be delivered
in about a month and will be installed. It can be used in any way we choose_ John
explained that he is hoping to use it for an INTERNET work station. A separate phone
line will be required. Installation for phone lines with run approximately $300_ as
a one-time fee_ Monthly cost will be approx. $20_ for phone line. John said that
a budget amendment will probably have to be submitted to City Council for these funds_
Extra work stations expense would be considered at budget time next fiscal year.
Geoff asked about children's access to INTERNET with regard to censorship. This will
have to addressed in the future. Present Library policy is a "take it or leave it"
one in which each person is responsible for his "censoring" and parents for their
childrens. Geoff stated that with regard to the INTERNET patrons would need to be
informed that they might encounter materials offensive to them.
John told about last monthly West Texas Library System meeting in Lubbock_ After
the regular meeting, a genealogy workshop was held_ Ruth Gooch gave a presentation
and passed out brochures regarding the genealogy collection at Unger Library_
John praised genealogists for all their work in obtaining information and entering
data in computers on Hale County Cemetery records_ Some 30,000 entries are now
in that data base and printout_
Joy Denton requested Plainview School annuals be donated to the genealogy collection_
Debby Glbson asked for volunteers to read at Third Thursday Story Time . This is a
monthly program held each month for 3-5 year olds and their siblings that is sponsored
by the Hale County Literacy Program.
John announced that the next meeting of the Advisory Board will be the 2nd Tuesday
of March (March 12, 1996)
