Meeting of Unger Memorial Library Advisory Council was scheduled for this time.
Board members were not in attendance. Joy Denton, president of High -Plains
Genealogical Society; Phil Cox, president of Friends of UML; and Lucile
Davis, WTLS lay representative were present.
John Sigwald discussed items from agenda with those present.
Irene Favila has resigned as City Council liaison to the Library Board.
Muff London has resigned as Director of Community Development for the City
of Plainview. John is presently reporting directly to City Manager Jim Jeffers_
Debby Gibson has been hired as the new Literacy coordinator_ She has several
ideas for new programs_ One of those "Third Thursday" was started in December
and is a family literacy program for 3-5 year olds and their parents. A program
will be held the third Thursday of each month (through May 1996) with reading
of picture books, storytelling, etc. and at the end of each program each family
will be given a copy of the main picturebook that was read_ The literacy Council
will pay for the books to be given away. She is also working on a Computer
Literacy program for adults in conjunction with Highland Elementary pricipal
Lou Anne Northcutt_ The is would be a six-week pilot program with the Literacy
Council paying the salary for the teacher and the PISD furnishing facilities, etc_
New bags for the book cassettes in Juvenile dept_ and magazine checkout have
been purchased. They are sturdy --nylon on one side and plastic on the other --
zippered bags of bright colors.
John will be going to ALA Midwinter Conference in San Antonio next THursday,
1-18-96.
John showed a copy of Lubbock Avalanche -Journal dated 1-5-96 that told about
Lubbock Public Library system passing an official policy regarding confidentiality
of materials checked out by patrons_ This is being done now here and will be
specifically addressed in revised Policy Manual of UML_
John told how Internet is now available at library through Plainview Herald
bulletin board_ the Herald is furnishing free access to three sites for the
City of Plainview -- one is Jim Jeffers, City Manager, another is City Engineer
and the third is the Unger Library. John hopes to set up at least one site
for public access in future. He stated he will be asking for money in next
year's budget for this project_
After the meeting was adjourned, John showed those present how Internet works
by showing the site we presently have set up in the workroom upstairs (main floor).
