The City of Plainview Fire Department, along with the Plainview
Cancer Support Group, invite the public to join them for the
Plainview Firefighters Monument & Memorial Plaza Unveiling
th
scheduled for Saturday, June 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Fire Station 2,
2701 Dimmitt Road.
The ceremony will include a history of the project, helmet unveiling,
statue unveiling and tours of the station after the ceremony.
The monument and plaza are in recognition of IAFF #3142, local
fire union’s financial support of the Plainview Cancer Support Group, as well as a public “thank you” for
the department’s work in the community.
In October 2022, a committee consisting of Andrea Ingram, Sherrie Wall, Rusty Ingram, Mike Melcher,
Phyllis Wall, Carol Terrell and Le’Ann McNutt, was formed to design the mural and raise funds.
The total project cost was $65,000, and no public funding was used for the project. The committee
raised funds via letters, social media and donation boxes at United Supermarket. One of the most fun
aspects of the campaign included a fundraising campaign by PISD elementary and middle school
students. They raised more than $3,600, mostly in quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, to purchase a
life-size fire helmet as part of the memorial.
The main structure was sculpted by Richard Young, and the life-size fire helmet was designed and
sculpted by Lubbock artist Garland Weeks.
Besides PISD students, other donors included Lee Lewis Construction, Thrasher, Inc., S & S Electric
I.M.S. and many Plainview citizens.
