City of Plainview Receives
Project of the Year Award at
Annual Texas – American
Public Works Association
June 13, 2024 – The City of Plainview was
recently awarded Project of the Year for
Environment between $5M-$25M from the
Texas – American Public Works Association
for their efforts in recycling materials from the
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Water Meter Project.
During the project, the Recycle Center has been able to recycle 90% of the project’s components
resulting in only 10% of old components being sent to the landfill. Staff were able to recycle water meter
items including cardboard packaging and brass, plastic, corrugated steel, and cast-iron components of
the old meters. Not only did this save valuable landfill space, it also returned precious metals into the
American economy.
The City of Plainview City Council recognized Public Works Director Neil Weems and Solid Waste
Superintendent Brock Lively at their Tuesday night Council meeting. Weems was presented the award
at the annual APWA Conference ceremony held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San
th
Antonio on Tuesday, June 4.
