Unger Memorial Library to Partner with “1000
Books Before Kindergarten” Program
May 2, 2024 -- The City of Plainview Unger Memorial Library will
be partnering with the 1000 Books Foundation in their early
childhood literacy program known as “1000 Books Before
Kindergarten” Reading Challenge.
The program encourages parents or caregivers to read 1,000 books to your newborn, infant and toddler
before they begin kindergarten with an innovative and fun approach to establish strong early literacy
skills. The goal is for parents and caregivers to give young children the confidence to become strong
readers and successful in school and life.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep track of the books they read to their children via log
sheets, journals, or the 1000 Books App available for iPhone or Android.
The Library offers more than 770 books designated for preschool and more than 5,200 books
designated for early readers (easy); any of these would be appropriate for the program. Visit
www.plainviewtx.org/library for sign-up links or stop by the Library (825 N. Austin) to get started. For
more information, contact the Library at 806-296-1148.
The 1000 Books Foundation is a Nevada 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity which operates the nationwide (and in Canada)
1000 Books Before Kindergarten early literacy challenge. The 1000 Books Foundation provides useful information and
resources to parents and caregivers and enables libraries, schools, churches, and other non-profit entities to host 1000
Books Before Kindergarten challenges in their local community.
