Properties for Demolitions
through Minimum Housing
Ordinance
The City Council during their Minimum Housing
Standards Meeting approved eight structures to
be demolished at their August 22, 2023 meeting.
The properties for consideration included the
following: 1010 Oakland Street, 906 & 908 West
th
9 Street, 309 Grove Street, 101 & 103 East
th
Brazier Street, 111 East Brazier Street and 1003 East 6 Street.
In an effort to address substandard and dangerous structures in the community, the City
Council overhauled the Minimum Housing/Dangerous Building Codes. The update
included the adoption of the International Property Maintenance Code, 2015 and Texas
Local Government Code 214 related to substandard structures. With this process, a
notice of violation is sent to the property owner and if no action is taken, the Board of
Minimum Housing Standards can deem a structure substandard. The City can then order
the structure to be repaired and/or demolished in a given timeframe.
Prior to Board of Minimum Housing meeting, City staff make every effort to work with the
property owner to repair or rehab the structure if possible. Unfortunately, saving the
structure is not always possible, and in those cases, the first preference is for the owner
to remove the structure. If they are unable or unwilling, then City staff or a contracted
company will remove the structure.
Texas Communities Group has been assisting our Community Development Department
with these cases.
