HomeMy WebLinkAbout07.29.2021 Unger Memorial Summer Reading Program Award Winners City of Plainview NEWS 901 Broadway St. Plainview, TX 79072 August 3, 2021 City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library Announces Summer Reading Challenge Award Winners The City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library announced the winners of the Tails & Tales Summer Reading Challenge last week. The challenge was divided into several different categories including Pre-School, Early rdrdththth Readers (Kindergarten – 3), Middle Readers (3 – 6), Middle School (6 – 8), High thth School (9 – 12) and Adults. Pre-school participants completed the challenge reading 272 books as a group and the others (including adults) read a total of 64,256 minutes, the equivalent of 44 days and 14 hours or 1,070 hours and 56 minutes. Top Readers Included: Overall / Most Outstanding Reader in Plainview Sophia Moore Preschool Granger Shackleford – 98 books Early Readers (K-3) Stella Perez – Read 3,295 minutes (54 hours, 55 minutes) Middle Readers (3-6) Sophia Moore – Read 11,790 minutes (196 hours, 30 minutes) Middle School (6-8) Montana Moore – Read 11,040 minutes (184 hours) High School (9-12) Kira Farnsworth – Read 5,710 minutes (95 hours, 10 minutes) Adult Reading Challenge Emilia Moore – Read 3,300 minutes (55 hours) The goals for time read in each category during the challenge is Kindergarten through rdrdththth 3 grade - 15 minutes daily, grades 3 – 6 – 30 minutes daily, grades 6 – 8 - 45 thth minutes daily and grades 9 -12 – 60 minutes daily and adults 90 minutes per day. stth The Reading Challenge began on Tuesday, June 1 and concluded on Friday, July 16. The Challenge was based on the time spent reading, not the number of books read. Contributors to the Summer Reading Program include Friends of the Unger Memorial Library – underwriters for the program each summer, Eastern New Mexico State University, West Texas Libraries, McDonalds, Taco Bell and Whataburger.
