City of Plainview Fire Department to begin Fire
Hydrant Flow Tests
The City of Plainview Fire Department will begin flow-testing the fire
st
hydrants located within the Plainview City limits on Thursday, July 1.
The process of hydrant flow-testing normally takes six weeks but may be
extended. Currently, there are more than 700 fire hydrants within the City limits and all
hydrants will be tested.
The flow tests are also beneficial to our citizens in various ways such as:
Allowing the Fire Department to color code hydrants based on the amount of
water that is available from the hydrant. This allows our firefighters to determine
if the flow capability of each hydrant.
Allowing “flushing” of debris and sediment from the water system. Removing
debris and sediment increases water quality and reduces the chances that the
debris or sediment will cause damage to fire engines.
Allowing the Fire and Water Departments to locate any problems associated with
our water distribution system.
The Fire Department use a specialized device called a diffuser. It records the pressure coming from
the hydrant, provides a path for delivery for water flow to prevent damage to yards and road surfaces and
allows the Fire Department to use less water during testing.
Testing will create some water on the roadways and portions of streets blocked for a
short time during the testing. The City asks residents to use caution while in an area
being tested and to watch for water on the roadway as well as personnel on site testing
the hydrants. Your patience and understanding during this time is greatly appreciated as
we work to protect citizens from fires and maintain water flow standards.
