HomeMy WebLinkAbout04.16.2021 Unger Memorial Summer Reading Program City of Plainview NEWS 901 Broadway St. Plainview, TX 79072 April 26, 2021 City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library Offering Tails & Tales “Virtual” Summer Reading Club & Programs The City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library is proud to announce the Tails & Tales “Virtual” Summer Reading Club and Programs. Geared for children who completed kindergarten through fifth grade, there will also be activities and a reading club for teens (those who completed sixth – twelfth grade) and adults. st One popular program is the Reading Challenge. It will begin on Tuesday, June 1 and th continue through Friday, July 16. The Challenge will be based on the time spent reading, not the number of books read. “Our emphasis is to encourage reading of any type – books, e-books, magazines, newspapers as well as audio books,” says Cynthia Peterson, Chief Librarian. “We would like to see every participant read at least the minimum amount of time for their specific age group.” rd Minimum amount of time for each category is Kindergarten through 3 grade - 15 rdththth minutes daily, grades 3 – 6 – 30 minutes daily, grades 6 – 8 - 45 minutes daily and ththrdth grades 9 -12 – 60 minutes daily. Third (3) and Sixth (6) graders are welcome to participate in one of two different groups depending on their individual reading skills and interests. Adults should read a minimum of 90 minutes per day. Participants are encouraged to sign up for the program by calling 296.1148 or visiting the Library page at www.plainviewtx.org/library. Once the submission form is completed, an email invitation for the ReaderZone app will be sent to track reading minutes and statistics. Those not wanting to download the app may obtain paper logs from the Library at a “come and go” packet pick up party on st Tuesday, June 1 or during normal library hours. Also, the Library will be offering five virtual programming events through the Science Spectrum in Lubbock. The programs will be offered on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. and include Restless Natives (6/8), Snakes (6/15), Reptiles (6/22), Creepy Crawlers (6/29) and Animal Adaptation (7/6). Furthermore, Andy Mason Music will be showcasing his musical talents and th entertainment for kids virtually on Tuesday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m. To receive the Zoom link, participants will need to complete a registration form; however, participation in the Summer Reading Program is not required to view the virtual programs. Registration for the Summer Reading Club is available at www.plainviewtx.org/library or by calling 806-296-1149. All residents of Plainview and greater Hale County are welcome. ###
