City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial
Library Offering Tails & Tales
“Virtual” Summer Reading Club &
Programs
The City of Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library is proud to announce the Tails & Tales
“Virtual” Summer Reading Club and Programs.
Geared for children who completed kindergarten through fifth grade, there will also be
activities and a reading club for teens (those who completed sixth – twelfth grade) and
adults.
st
One popular program is the Reading Challenge. It will begin on Tuesday, June 1 and
th
continue through Friday, July 16. The Challenge will be based on the time spent
reading, not the number of books read.
“Our emphasis is to encourage reading of any type – books, e-books, magazines,
newspapers as well as audio books,” says Cynthia Peterson, Chief Librarian. “We would
like to see every participant read at least the minimum amount of time for their specific
age group.”
rd
Minimum amount of time for each category is Kindergarten through 3 grade - 15
rdththth
minutes daily, grades 3 – 6 – 30 minutes daily, grades 6 – 8 - 45 minutes daily and
ththrdth
grades 9 -12 – 60 minutes daily. Third (3) and Sixth (6) graders are welcome to
participate in one of two different groups depending on their individual reading skills and
interests. Adults should read a minimum of 90 minutes per day.
Participants are encouraged to sign up for the program by calling 296.1148 or visiting
the Library page at www.plainviewtx.org/library.
Once the submission form is completed, an email invitation for the ReaderZone app will
be sent to track reading minutes and statistics. Those not wanting to download the app
may obtain paper logs from the Library at a “come and go” packet pick up party on
st
Tuesday, June 1 or during normal library hours.
Also, the Library will be offering five virtual programming events through the Science
Spectrum in Lubbock. The programs will be offered on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. and
include Restless Natives (6/8), Snakes (6/15), Reptiles (6/22), Creepy Crawlers (6/29)
and Animal Adaptation (7/6).
Furthermore, Andy Mason Music will be showcasing his musical talents and
th
entertainment for kids virtually on Tuesday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m.
To receive the Zoom link, participants will need to complete a registration form;
however, participation in the Summer Reading Program is not required to view the
virtual programs.
Registration for the Summer Reading Club is available at www.plainviewtx.org/library or
by calling 806-296-1149. All residents of Plainview and greater Hale County are
welcome.
