City of Plainview Chief Librarian Cynthia Peterson
Chosen to Serve as Vice-Chair of the Texas Library
Association Lariat Committee
The City of Plainview Unger Memorial Chief Librarian Cynthia Peterson was
chosen to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Texas Library Association Lariat
Committee. Peterson currently completed her first year of a three-year board
term.
The committee is tasked with creating the Lariat Adult Fiction Reading List.
Since 2009, the goal of the List is to highlight outstanding fiction that is simply
“a pleasure to read.” Each year, 25 outstanding fiction titles are selected by the nine-member Lariat
committee.
“Selecting books for the Unger Library is part of my job and the committee was a natural fit,” says
Cynthia Peterson, Chief Librarian. “It allowed me the opportunity to read a variety of books I wouldn’t
normally read and offer a larger variety to our patrons.”
As the Vice-Chair, Peterson is responsible for working with publishers to obtain books for the
committee to review. The committee will read around 100 books before narrowing the list to 25. The
committee normally meets in December but due to COVID-19, the group met via Zoom earlier this
year to finalize the list.
“The committee looks for a diverse genre of books and well as one with diverse stories,” says
Peterson, “It is quite a process to narrow the list.”
All books chosen for the Lariat Adult Fiction Reading List are available at Unger Memorial Library and
several are also available via E-books as well.
“We are proud to have Cynthia serve on the Lariat Board,” says Jeff Johnston, Assistant City
Manager. “Her experience working with the Lariat committee will provide great benefits for our Library
and the community.”
