Unger Memorial Library Presents 2024
Summer Reading Awards

August 9, 2024 – On Saturday, July 27, the City of
Plainview’s Unger Memorial Library held their annual
Summer Reading Awards Program.
Ninety-one participants, including preschoolers, received a
Summer Reading Challenge Certificate of Participation. In
addition, the following participants received achievement awards in their categories:

Overall Winner – Sophia Moore, (14, 250 minutes); 3 consecutive year as the overall winner.

Early Readers – 1 place, Magnus Moore (2,575 minutes); 2 place, Maddison Oglesby (1,659 minutes);

and 3 place, Naiya Barrientos (1,060).

Middle Readers – 1 place, Elese James (4,742 minutes); 2 place, Anahi Ceniceros (3,621 minutes); and

3 place, Geovani Ceniceros (3,426 minutes).

Junior High Readers – 1 place, Sophia Moore (14,250 minutes); 2 place, Jabin James (5,295 minutes);
rd
and 3 place, Aaliyah Bautista (2,996 minutes).

High School Readers – 1 place, Montana Moore (4,115 minutes) and 2 place, Ammie Waugh (1,112
minutes)

Adults – 1 place, Vanessa Ceniceros (4,888 minutes); 2 place, Richard Bautista (2,668 minutes); and

3 place, Donna Waugh (2,640 minutes).
Many of the readers also received “brag tags” for reading 25, 50, 75, or 100 percent of the minutes for
their reading groups. Reading 100% or more were Keano Barrientos, Naiya Barrientos, Aaliya Bautista,
Anahi Ceniceros, Geovani Ceniceros, Vanessa Ceniceros, Elese James, Jabin James, Magnus Moore,
Mitchell Moore, Montana Moore, Sophia Moore, Maddison Oglesby, Granger Shackleford, and Elijah Turk.

The Reading Challenge is designed to promote reading during the summer (June 1 – July 15). Early

readers, (Kindergarten -3 grade), were encouraged to read a minimum of fifteen minutes; middle readers

(grades 3 – 6) – 30 minutes; junior high readers (grades 7 & 8) – 45 minutes and senior high readers

(grades 9 -12) – 60 minutes. Adults were challenged to read 90 minutes a day, and minutes were
tracked online in the ReaderZone app or on paper logs submitted to the Library.
Many of our preschool participants are also enrolled in the ongoing “1000 Books Before Kindergarten”
program. Parents interested in the program may sign up at the library or online (www.plainviewtx.org /
Library / News/Events/Program) to access the “1000 Books” information.

In addition to the Reading Challenge, Unger Library hosted twenty-one programs from June 4 through

July 9 with an attendance of 362. Programs included Andy Mason, Doyal Reagan from PBS Kids and Kyle
Groves Magic Show at the Fair Theatre.
