A priority to ensure Plainview’s water supply for many years, the goals include water conservation, water education, water reclamation, storage for water supplies from various sources, more available water and more water supply sources. The stakeholders noted several areas of concentration to achieve these goals including conservation (voluntary and enforced), education, cooperation with agriculture, diversification (economic and water supply), recharging the aquifer and ensuring sufficient water supply. Several challenges noted include careless use of water, limited water sources, weather, cost of sufficient water, infrastructure and resistance to change. “We appreciate the input from everyone at the stakeholder’s meeting,” said Paul Kite, Assistant Director of Water Utilities. “A city cannot survive without water and their willingness to identify goals for the Plan is a big step in ensuring Plainview’s water supply and its future.” The City enlisted HDR Engineering to assist with the development of a Long-Range Water Supply Plan which will focus on the orderly development of water supplies to meet the future needs of the City’s retail and wholesale water customers. The first step of the plan was the stakeholder’s meeting to determine goals. Next, HDR will work with City staff to formulate future water demand scenarios, establish current water supplies and determine needs, evaluate water supply alternatives and develop an implementation plan. HDR presented the results of the meeting to the Plainview City Council on Thursday. Stakeholder meeting attendees include Mayor Pro Tem Susan Blackerby, Chris Lefevre, Charles Starnes, Kerry McCormack, Tonya Keesee, Tyke Dipprey, Donald Ebling, Mike Fox, Gary Massengill, and City staff Terrence Miles, Jessie Espinoza, Joe Vail, Brian Galloway, Tim Crosswhite, Melinda Brown, Paul Kite and Jeffrey Snyder.
