Most adults over the age of 55 will remember this event and we thought it would be fun to include some programs and book discussions for combined teen and adult groups.” The children’s programming will include demonstrations of drones and remote-controlled planes, paper airplanes, and straw rockets showing participants the physics of flight. The paper airplane demonstration will culminate two weeks th later with “The Great Paper Airplane Competition” on Wednesday, June 19. Children in grades K-2 and 3-5 groupings will compete in duration, distance, and acrobatics with paper airplanes they have designed themselves. The Science Spectrum in Lubbock will also do two traveling programs at the Library – one on stargazing in the Texas th night sky on Monday, June 10 and the other devoted to how astronauts live and work in space on Monday, June 24th. The children will also be treated to the music of Andy Mason, who promises to sing a song or two about space. The last th program of the summer will be our annual Zumba program held on Friday, June 28. The children will also be split into three groups for stories and arts and crafts to enable more age-appropriate books and stories as well as crafts. Placement in groups will be based on the school year just ending to allow for children to have basic and advanced reading skills, as well as those who have not yet begun to read. “Previously the lower grades were combined with the preschoolers and that is not an optimum grouping,” continued Peterson. “So this summer preschoolers will be in a separate group. Then there will be two older reading groups – one group containing those who have just finished Kindergarten, first, and second grades and another reading group containing those who have just finished third, fourth, and fifth grades.” The teen and adult program will include book discussions on favorite fiction and non-fiction books about space each th Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. On Friday, June 7, adults and teens are invited to a program by Dr. Erin Heath from Wayland about space movies prior to 1969. Participants will then be able to watch the original 1953 version of War of the Worlds with a discussion to follow. The event will be held at the Fair Theater (717 Broadway) and admission is $2.00 and concessions will be available.
