HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.28.19 Special Election City of Plainview NEWS 901 Broadway St. Plainview, TX 79072 August 27, 2019 Plainview City Council calls Special Election for Vacant Council Seat The Plainview City Council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Council Member District Seven Representative Oliver Aldape and declared a vacancy for the seat. th A special election will be held Tuesday, November 5 to fill the seat st and early voting will be Monday – October 21 – Friday, November st 1. Councilmember Aldape has notified the City that he is resigning his position with the City. According to the City Charter, “a vacancy in the City Council, including the Mayor, shall not be filled by appointment, but must be filled by majority vote of the qualified voters at a special election called for such purpose within one hundred twenty (120) days after such vacancy occurs.” His term expires May 2020. “We enjoyed having Mr. Aldape on the City Council. I greatly appreciate his contribution on the Council and service to the community,” said Mayor Wendell Dunlap. “He will be missed.” th The filing date for the position will begin on Wednesday, August 28 and will end on th Wednesday, September 4. Candidate packets are available at City Hall (901 Broadway) from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday and can be returned to Belinda Hinojosa, City Secretary, at the same location. A map with the specific area of the district is available on the website at http://www.plainviewtx.org/DocumentCenter/View/149. Only residents in District Seven are eligible to vote. To be eligible to run for City Council, a person must be a United States citizen; be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election; have not been determined by final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be total mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote; have not been finally convicted of a felony; shall have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and shall have resided within the district from which said councilmember is to be elected for at least 6 months.
