HomeMy WebLinkAbout1.03.18 City Council Elections City of Plainview NEWS 901 Broadway St. Plainview, TX 79072 January 3, 2018 th City Council Elections will be May 5 th Filing Date begins January 17 The first filing date for a place on the ballot for the City Council elections will be Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Candidate packets will be available at the Office of the City Secretary beginning January 5, 2018 and the election will be held Saturday, th May 5. Four districts are slated for election: Districts One, Two, Three and Four. City Councilmembers serve a four year term of office and are eligible to serve two terms (eight years). “Serving on the City Council is a lot of work but is also very rewarding,” says Mayor Wendell Dunlap. “Plainview is moving forward and we encourage anyone who is interested in serving on the Council to file. It is a great way to make a difference in Plainview.” District One area includes the northeast corner of the City, District Two covers the southeast corner of the City, District Three covers mid-part of the City and District Four covers the southwest corner of the City. Maps with the specific area of the district are available on the website. To be eligible to run for City Council, a person must be a United States citizen; be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election; have not been determined by final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be total mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote; have not been finally convicted of a felony; shall have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and shall have resided within the district from which said councilmember is to be elected for at least 6 months. Important dates to note include: th January 5 – Candidate packets available th January 17 – First day to file for a place on the ballot th February 16 – Last day to file for a place on the ballot rd April 23 – First day of early voting st May 1 – Last day of early voting th May 5 – Election Day “Candidate packets will be available this Friday,” says Belinda Hinojosa, City Secretary. “If you think you might be interested in placing your name on the ballot, we encourage you to pick up a packet.” For additional information, please contact City Secretary at (806) 296- or visit www.plainviewtx.org and search “elections.” ##
