City of Plainview Fire Department to begin Fire Hydrant Flow
Tests
The Plainview Fire Department will begin flow-testing the fire hydrants located within the
nd
Plainview City limits on Monday, April 2.
The process of hydrant flow-testing normally take several weeks and the Fire Department plan to
have testing completed by the end of May. Currently, there are more than 700 fire hydrants
within the City limits.
Spring is optimal testing time because the water demand is less than during the summer months
and the threat of freezing water on our roadways should be eliminated.
The flow tests are also beneficial to our citizens in various ways such as:
Allowing the Fire Department to color code hydrants based on the amount of water that
is available from the hydrant. This allows our firefighters to determine if the flow
capability of each hydrant.
Allowing “flushing” of debris and sediment from the water system. Removing debris
and sediment increases water quality and reduces the chances that the debris or sediment
will cause damage to fire engines.
Allowing the Fire and Water Departments to locate any problems associated with our
water distribution system.
Testing will create some water on the roadways and portions of streets blocked for a short time
during the testing. The City appreciates your patience and understanding during this time as we
work to protect citizens from fires and maintain water flow standards.
