Plainview City Council calls Special Election for Vacant
Council Seat
The Plainview City Council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of
Council Member District Six Representative John Gatica and declared a
vacancy for the seat.

A special election will be held Saturday, September 22 to fill the seat and early voting

will be Wednesday, September 5 – Tuesday, September 18.
Councilmember Gatica has notified the City that he has moved out of the District and is
residing in his hometown of Slaton, Texas. According to the City Charter, “the office of
Mayor or Councilmember shall become vacant upon the member’s death, resignation,
removal from office, or forfeiture of office in any manner authorized by law.”
His term expires May 2020.
“We appreciate Mr. Gatica’s work on the Council,” said Mayor Wendell Dunlap. “We
wish him well in his new endeavors.”

The filing date for the position will begin on Friday, June 22 and will end on Monday,

July 23. Candidate packets are available at City Hall (901 Broadway) from 8:00 a.m. –
5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday and can be returned to Belinda Hinojosa, City Secretary, at
the same location.

http://www.plainviewtx.org/DocumentCenter/View/149. Only residents in District Six are
eligible to vote.
To be eligible to run for City Council, a person must be a United States citizen; be 18
years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election; have not
been determined by final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be total
mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote; have
not been finally convicted of a felony; shall have resided continuously in the state for 12
months and shall have resided within the district from which said councilmember is to
be elected for at least 6 months.
