The City and County have acquired approximately 140 acres of land located west of Interstate 27 and just north of Highway 194 (Dimmitt Highway) for this project. While the majority of the site is currently undeveloped farm land, the project is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled to begin in Spring of 2018. “We are excited to see this project continue to take shape,” says Plainview Mayor Wendell Dunlap. “Special thank you to the County for their partnership on this catalyst project.” One of the first steps was selecting Parkhill, Smith & Cooper (PSC) to assist in the development and design of the new Business Park in Plainview. The next step included the creation of a steering committee of City, County and EDC officials last October. The committee has held several meetings over this past year to discuss road design, water and sewer infrastructure, park entrance options as well as coordinating with electric and gas utilities, BNSF rail and WATCO rail services. A few weeks ago included a meeting with adjacent landowners to answer questions and work together on any concerns. “The project is nearing the 65% design completion stage and is coming together very well,” said Jeffrey Snyder, City Manager. “The Business Park project reflects the great cooperation that exists between the city, county and EDC,” says Mike Fox, Plainview/Hale County EDC Director. The proposed Business Park will be zoned area for commercial and industrial use. Approximately half of the 140-acre industrial park will be sub-divided into five and ten acre tracts and the remaining acreage will not be sub-divided under the current phase and will be reserved for future tenant needs. The proposed location was chosen for the diverse transportation accessibility. The park has immediate access to Interstate 27, which spans from Amarillo, Texas to Lubbock, Texas and is a part of the Ports to Plains Trade Corridor. Another unique asset for this particular property is its close proximity to rail access, which runs adjacent to the southern boundary of the proposed business park. “One of the most important, if not the most important demographic in any community is 18-to-35- year-olds,” said John Hamilton, PE, the Transportation Director for PSC and Plainview native. “A key measurable of vibrant community is the success with which they not only retain but attract citizens from this demographic to stay in the community after graduation to work, raise families, build businesses and contribute to the community as a whole.” “My 30th Plainview High School reunion is next year. If this project would have been initiated in 1988, when I was a senior in high school, instead of now, it would be interesting to see how many jobs the park would have helped the community generate during this time period. How many of my fellow classmates would be driving across town — instead of across the state — to attend our class reunion next summer.” When completed, the proposed Business Park will be a new facility zoned area for commercial and industrial us. In addition to Plainview’s great location, this will give the community a great asset to market to potential employers. “A business park is a ‘must’ for any community in the Panhandle of Texas that aspires to grow,’ says County Judge Bill Coleman. “This park will be an essential piece in the puzzle for this community going forward.” ###
