November is Diabetes Awareness Month
This November, the Plainview – Hale County Health
Department will observe National Diabetes Month.
More than 10 % of the population - 37 million people in the
United States, are living with diabetes. And 1 in 4 aren’t
even aware they have the disease.
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose,
also called blood sugar, is too high. It can damage the eyes,
kidneys, nerves and heart, and it is linked to some types of cancer.
Several steps to prevent diabetes health problems include:
Managing your A1C blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
Taking care of your mental health.
Make lifestyle changes to slowly build healthy habits.
Take your medicines on time, even if you feel healthy.
Work closely with your primary care provider.
While these steps are geared towards those living with the disease, they are also beneficial to preventing
the disease as well.
