Safety Tips for the Holiday Season
As the Holiday Season draws near, the City of Plainview Fire/EMS Department is committed to helping your
family stay safe. While Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, decorations, gifts, and festive activities
come with certain safety risks. Take a moment to review these holiday safety tips to ensure a safe and happy
season for your home and loved ones:
1. Holiday Lights:
o Inspect all lights before use. Look for damaged wires, exposed cords, or broken bulbs.
o Always turn off lights when leaving the house or going to bed.
o Use lights that are tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory (e.g., UL).
o Avoid overloading electrical outlets and circuits.
2. Live Trees:
o Choose a fresh tree with green needles that do not fall off easily.
o Keep the tree watered daily to prevent it from drying out, as dry trees can catch fire more easily.
o Place the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, or heating vents.
o Dispose of the tree promptly after Christmas; do not leave it in your home or garage where it could
pose a fire risk.
3. Small Toys and Children:
o Keep small toys, especially those with small parts, out of reach of young children to avoid choking
hazards.
o For toddlers, choose age-appropriate gifts that are larger than their mouth and free of sharp edges.
o Always supervise children with toys that have batteries or involve small parts, and ensure batteries
are securely sealed.
4. Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries:
o Many holiday gifts may include devices with lithium-ion batteries (such as electronics, toys, and
tools). Always follow manufacturer guidelines when charging these devices.
o Never leave devices charging unattended, especially overnight.
o Only use the charging equipment that comes with the device and ensure it is in good condition.
o Charge devices on a flat, hard surface, away from flammable materials.
Remember, a little attention to safety can help ensure that your holiday season is filled with joy, not
danger.
