Curry, Hale County Medical Authority Stephen Turner and. the secretary, Billie Standefer. After the invocation by Dr. Michael Hinze, Chairman Linton asked for corrections/additions to the minutes of the last meeting.- Mr. Peck stated he had been present at the last meeting, but his name had been left off the list of those present. After the correction had been noted, the minutes were approved„ The Chairman then asked for approval of the expenditures from October, 1998, thru February of 1999. After a motion by Mr. Peck to approve payment of the expenditures and a second to that motion by Dr. Hinze, the Board voted its approval. Dr. Turner told Board members he had been asked to be the Keynote Speaker at the State of Texas Governor Law and Liability meeting in Austin in October of this year. He stated he had attended the National Pediatric Infectious Disease meeting, in April, and had attended a sub -section meeting on Public Health which was very informative. He said Hale County's Communicable diseases were routine, as were the reports on S.T.D.'s. He stated he had diag- nosed one case of positive H.I.V. He explained the Texas Department of Health is going to require all children going to kindergarten to have the Varicella (Chicken Pox) Vaccine, by August of the year 2000; also, children near the Border and in the valley area will be required to have the Hepatitis A Vaccine, because of a 'tremendous outbreak" of Hepatitis A. Dr. Turner encouraged anyone traveling to these areas to have the Hepatitis A Vaccine. He shared there was a new Vaccine for Roto Virus, a disease that kills many children. He said this was to be taken when the child was 2 months, 4 months and 6 months of age. At this time, he said, the State was only providing this vaccine for children on Medicaid; however, in the near future, it could be available from Texas Department of Health for all children. Dr. Turner told Board members he keeps, a supply of travel medicine at his office for those who travel out- side the United States. He said the one he doesn't keep is the Yellow Fever Vaccine because of the great amount of paper work in requires and the fact you are required to have a permit to keep it. He stated individuals who needed this vaccine could get it in Lubbock. Mr. Peck suggested it would be a good idea to have an article in the newspaper about Hepatitis A. Mrs. Curry stated the Department was encouraging young adolescents to get the Hepatitis Vaccine. Mr. Peck asked if there was a treatment for Hepatitis C. Dr. Turner responded, saying it was "almost impossible to treat Hepatitis C, once it has been diagnosed", but, on a happier note, there is a new drug for the "common cold" that will be available in about eight years. Kathy Curry explained Texas Department of Health has Title V monies for the Baby - Think It Over Program for abstainance-based planning. The proposals for the funds will not be available until .7uly, she said. She stated she had been studying the old proposals while waiting for the new ones. She told Board members she would attend a class in Lubbock with Lubbock Area Found- ation Corporation to get information for other grant funds. Dr. Linton said there had been some talk of a Dialyses Center being planned for Plainview. Rey Rosas was introduced as the Board's new member - After extending excused absences for Margaret Kay and Cind- Ebeling, the Chairman adjourned the meeting. Billie Standefer Secretary
