DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON LIBRARY ACTIVITIES
1/14/85
The Unger Library has been designated a Texas Heritage Resource
Center by the Texas Heritage Project of the Texas Historical
Foundation. What this means is that the library maintains a
basic collection of books about Texas. We are still working
on consolidating the Texas collection --we will probably put
older Texas reference material in the genealogy collection.
With the impetus given by the Hi -Plains Genealogical Society we
are investigating a detection system for the library's books.
Until the reclassification project is completed (several more
years) it will be virtually impossible to put an accurate total
on book loss. Unfortunately, we have lost several genealogy and
reference books. Circulating materials also have disappeared
but, again, accurate figures are hard to estimate without a
complete inventory. Anway, a representative from one company will
be coming to Plainview from Ft. Worth to give a demonstration
sometime in January. The genealogy department has indicated to
me that they can provide initial funding for this project.
I think it is a good idea and would like to dedicate some of
next year's funds toward expanding our coverage. The collection
is our core of information and this system will help maintain
its integrity.
We did hire a new clerk--Kathrine McGhghy--so we're at budgeted
full staff for the moment.
We now have a poster display on Martin Luther King, Jr. in the
north half of the balcony.
We finally began a weekly pre-school story hour in October. It
has been moderately successful with 10-15 children attending
each week. We have had some volunteer help but we could always
use more...
The book review column has pretty well settled into a bi-weekly
Thursday column in the Herald with various volunteers and
occasionally me writing the reviews.
