Kelly, and Rita Cronholm ;Minnie Ruth Rigler, Literacy coordinator, Ruth Gooch, Friends
of UML President, Muff London, director of Community Development for the City of Plainview
and John Sigwald, Librarian.
John reported that we had found graffiti spraypainted in the men's bathroom within the
last hour. Muff said the City had found that you should always to repaint as soon as
possible..
John reported that Fine -Free Day held in conjunction with Make a Difference Day
got some books back and waived approx. $130. in fines.
JOhn reported that he is trying to get the most and best CDs for the CD -Rom tower
in the reference section. We have gotten recently a CD with Contemporary Authors.
Display cases this month are by the Senior Citizens Center.
Continuing a discussion of out -of -county fees for library borrowers that was
begun last month, John showed the Board members a list of Texas libraries that
charge Non -Resident fees that range from $1. one-time fee to $100. per family annual
fee. He said that after checking with Karen McBeth, City Secretary he found that
the City receives approximately the same amount of money from Sales Tax and Property
Taxes. John suggested that we continue with our current policy ($10. per year).
Pat Kelly made the motion that the policy of $10. per year for out -of -county
borrowers be continued. Geoff Wells seconded that motion. There was no discussion.
The Board voted unanimously to retain the present policy.
John reported that last Tues, November 1, 1994, Terry Miller returned the book
"What I Heard" by Mark Geller stating that she felt it should be removed and parents
should be warned about content of books. She stated she recently moved here from
Borger and she stated that the Library there did warn parents about content of books.
John explained to her that we operate under ALA guidelines --our Juvenile fiction is
3rd -8th grade level and that parents should always use parental guidance with
regard to books for their children. John did contact Borger Public Library and
found they do not warn parents of content of books and do operate the same guidelines
that we do. They are part of the Harrington Consortium through Amarillo Public
Library. Several libraries in the Consortium do have this book - some in the Youth
and others Juvenile -Fiction. Reviews John got were nearly all positive. Options
for the Board are : retain, move (not feasible in this case) or remove. Discussion
followed. Rita Cronholm made the motion to retain book in its present location.
Treva James seconded the motion. The Board voted unanimously for the motion.
Due to Christmas holidays, the Board agreed to cancel the December meeting.
The Board will meet next in January, 1995.
Meeting was adjourned.
